The SHT 5600 water sensor is identical to the SHT 5006 standard water sensor, except that the SHT 5600 features an additional third contact in the gap between the two ground contacts. In conjunction with the SHT 5001 water detector, this makes it possible to differentiate between "ground moisture" and "continuing rising water" signals and initiate different actions, as the SHT 5001 uses a separate relay for each of the two states.

Sensor with three nickel-plated brass contacts encased in white plastic. As soon as water touches the two ground contacts, the water detector triggers an alarm. The third contact is only for the second sensor input in the SHT 5000. First, soil moisture is detected; when water touches the third, middle contact, rising water is also detected. New, improved version with a wide notch that reliably prevents existing water films and condensation bridges.
The cable length of the sensor can be extended up to a maximum of 50 m, whereby the cross-section should not exceed 3 x 0.14 mm².
The LIYY cables are only temporarily waterproof and, according to the manufacturer, are flame-retardant, low-adhesion, self-extinguishing and largely resistant to oils, greases, coolants and lubricants.

The function of the freewheeling diode is to suppress voltage spikes that occur when the relay is turned off. This minimizes current flow and voltage, thus protecting the sensitive reed contacts.
