Exhaust systems such as bathroom fans or extractor hoods create negative pressure in the room if there is insufficient fresh air flow. If a fireplace (e.g., gas boiler, central heating boiler) is located in the same room, there is a risk that toxic exhaust gases – such as carbon monoxide – will be sucked back into the living space from the chimney.

The KGS 116 exhaust air control system prevents precisely this risk: It only allows the exhaust air system to operate when the fireplace is not in use.

The control unit is permanently connected to the potential-free contact of the gas boiler (normally open). As soon as the boiler ignites, the KGS 116 detects the changed contact state and interrupts the power supply to the connected exhaust air system.

If the gas boiler is deactivated again, the control system automatically releases the exhaust air system again.

Safety principle: Exhaust air is only permitted if no exhaust gases can be produced.

Connection example

The KGS 116 cable gas boiler control system queries the potential-free normally open contact of a gas boiler and converts the gas boiler's state change into a switching of the potential-free changeover relay. This system can be used to turn off a bathroom fan, for example, when the gas boiler is ignited.

The KGS 116 control unit is connected to the potential-free contact (normally open) of the gas boiler with a cable. As soon as combustion starts, the exhaust air system (e.g., bathroom fan) is switched off. The control unit can be installed surface-mounted or flush-mounted in a distribution box, switch, or socket with a minimum diameter of 60 mm. The side mounting tabs on the control unit can be removed if necessary.

How exactly does the KGS 116 exhaust air control work? The KGS 116 is connected directly to a potential-free contact on the gas boiler via cable. As soon as the heater goes into operation and switches the contact, the control recognizes the signal and automatically interrupts the power supply to the exhaust system. After the heater is switched off, the exhaust system is released again.

Which devices can I control with the KGS 116? The control is suitable for all exhaust air systems with 230V alternating voltage up to max. 1,150W, e.g. E.g. bathroom fans, extractor hoods or pipe fans.

What if the gas boiler fails or the line is interrupted? The KGS 116 works according to the safety principle “exhaust air is only permitted when the heater is switched off”. If the control signal disappears, the exhaust system remains switched off - a safe condition is guaranteed.

Where is the KGS 116 installed? The KGS 116 is a built-in device in a slightly hexagonal format for typical flush-mounted or cavity wall boxes. It is usually installed near the exhaust system, ideally where the mains connection is located.

What do I do if my gas boiler outputs 230V when starting instead of a potential-free signal? In this case, an electrician can install a standard 230V relay. When activated, this creates a potential-free contact that the KGS 116 recognizes and evaluates. A simple and secure solution.

Can I install the KGS 116 myself? We recommend installation by a trained electrician. The control intervenes in the mains power and requires a secure connection in accordance with VDE regulations.

Is exhaust air control required by law? In many cases yes. The federal states' combustion regulations (FeuVO) stipulate that exhaust systems and fireplaces may only be operated together if safe operation is ensured - e.g. B. through a technical safety device such as the KGS 116.

Is the KGS 116 approved? No, we do not have DIBt certification for this article. Involve your chimney sweep in your planning before installation so that nothing stands in the way of acceptance afterwards. There are clear regional differences on which Elektrotechnik-Schabus has no influence.
